My home didn’t feel cosy enough, so here’s what I did.

Have you ever finished a room, looked around and felt like it was still missing its soul? I have!

I’d already got the sofa, the rug and the paint on the walls, but it still felt like showroom. It didn’t really feel me.

Now, whenever I’m working on a room refresh and get that feeling in a client's space, I know exactly what’s missing. It’s usually that "magic layer" of interior styling.

Home accessories are the making of a well-designed room. They shouldn’t just be filler items or things to take up space, but the finishing touches that bring colour, texture and personality into your home. When used correctly, they are what make a room feel complete (and totally fabulous).

If your space is feeling a little flat lately, let me share how I hunted down and styled the pieces that finally made my house feel like a dream home.

  1. I ditched the ‘I quite like this’ energy

When I was out shopping, I enforced a strict rule - I could only pick pieces I truly love. If I wasn’t thinking about it for days after, it wasn’t coming home with me. Your accessories should make you smile or just give you that lovely feeling every time you walk past them. If it doesn't make your heart sing, it doesn't belong!

  2. I looked out for colour echos

To make colourful interiors feel beautifully curated rather than just cluttered, I think about how each piece fits into the wider colour palette. Does the tone of a vase echo a shade from a cushion or a snippet of the wallpaper? Repeating colour in these little moments is what brings everything together and makes a space feel intentional and professional.

  3. I kept editing and assessing

There’s often an overwhelming urge to fill every single gap on the shelf or sideboard. However, I made sure not to crowd my shelves or surfaces. To make a personal home interior feel right, you have to know when to stop. Give your gorgeous bits some space to shine. It’s all about balance, breathing room and a sense of rhythm.

What’s that one accessory that feels like you? Is it a vintage vase, a bold cushion or something special you found on holiday?

I’d love to hear about the pieces that make your home feel like you. Send me a message and let’s chat about them!
