How to make a dark room feel brighter

…and more joyful!

When it comes to brightening up a space, the first thing I ask my clients isn’t about what colour schemes they’re considering.

Surprised?

It’s actually how they live. Because when you’re dealing with a room that feels a bit dark or flat, the solution isn't always more light, it’s usually more life.

I’m currently digging into a new project where we are transforming a space that feels a little uninspiring. My client wants a home that makes her heart sing, as worried it would feel like a "dead" space, but great design makes every room feel like a destination. Here’s how I help my clients turn those gloomy, darker corners of their home feel vibrant and full of life.

We master the flow of the room

Spatial planning is the secret ingredient here. In a dark room, if the furniture is too bulky or awkwardly placed, it eats the light and makes the space feel cramped. When I work with clients, I handle this stage to make sure the flow feels natural. A well-planned layout lets the light move through the room, making it feel open and easy to live in.

Forget the big light

Relying on the main ceiling light is an interior design mistake I see all the time! It usually creates harsh shadows in the corners. I love to use layered lighting to create warmth. Think about a floor lamp by a comfy chair or a small lamp on a sideboard. It’s about creating pools of light that make the room feel curated, cosy and perfect for a morning coffee on a dark winter morning.

Think about your surfaces

Instead of just looking at the walls, I look at furniture and home accessories. Choosing pieces with a bit of a sheen, like a glass coffee table, a metallic lamp base or even a mirror positioned to catch a glimpse of a window will bounce what light you do have around the room. It’s these thoughtful choices that create a space that feels alive.

I help women create colourful, joyful homes that work for their lifestyle and family, without the overwhelm or guesswork. Whether it's a room refresh or a full interior redesign, let's ditch the gloom and bring your vision to life!
